PLAINTIFFS COUNSEL SECTION - with interactive Listserver
(Members must apply to participate in the Listserver. Click here for Application)
The Plaintiffs Counsel Section provides a forum, including an interactive listserver, for those members of the association who primarily represent plaintiffs, claimants, or litigants who have suffered injury or damage in personal injury cases. This listserver is geared to the local Philadelphia practitioner and is a real-time educational tool.
PTLA continually works to preserve the constitutional guarantee of trial by jury and the right of access to the courts. PTLA also seeks to prevent legislative or judicial interference with Article III, Section 18, of the Pennsylvania Constitution that specifically prohibits the enactment of any law limiting the amount of recovery for injuries resulting "in death, or for injuries to persons or property." PTLA opposes legislation impacting negatively upon the rights of injured individuals whether in the workplace, or through the use of hazardous products, on the roadway, in health care institutions.
ADMINISTRATION OF JUSTICE
Members of the Board of PTLA continue to be engaged in ongoing attempts to improve the administration of the civil court system in Philadelphia. PTLA maintains dialogue with the Bench, administrative officers of the court, and comments on proposed local and statewide Rules of Civil Procedure. PTLA also participates as amicus curiae in cases involving significant legal issues of interest to our members.
Luncheon Lecture Series
Over the years PTLA's Luncheon Lecture Series has been the foundation of continuing legal education for our members. This program provides an opportunity for members to interact on a regular basis and keep abreast of changes in the law affecting our practice. With the advent of mandatory continuing legal education in Pennsylvania, PTLA has expanded the series to encompass the entire year on a wide variety of topics including annual updates of tort law in Pennsylvania. All Luncheon Lectures provide one (1) hour of CLE credit.
The Association's newsletter reports on important current issues in our practice, recent developments in Pennsylvania appellate law, Association events, and also features case notes on area arbitration awards, jury verdicts and settlements.
DEFENSE EXPERT WITNESS PROGRAM
PTLA's information bank contains the names of defense experts along with the names of attorneys who have notified the Association that they are willing to share their experiences, depositions, or reports with other PTLA members or members of the PaTLA Medical Malpractice Section.
The Association rents anatomical models to our members at a reasonable daily fee. They include a human torso, spinal column, dual herniated disc, head, hand, eye, knee, foot, hip, shoulder, heart, and more. Also available are the complete set of Frohse Anatomical Charts, published by A.J. Nystrom & Co., and the CIBA Collection of Medical Illustrations with a compilation of paintings prepared by Frank Netter, M.D., published by CIBA-Geigy Corporation. Click Here to see photographs and descriptions.
This annual award banquet, held in honor of the late Justice Michael A. Musmanno, is in its 37th year. Every year the Association honors an outstanding judge, lawyer or other citizen who through his or her work, best fulfills the ideals of the articulate and courageous jurist for whom it is named. This award dinner is the social highlight of the PTLA year and is always well attended by PTLA members, members of the state and federal bench, area legislators and their staffs.
